Mystery Veg!
For dinner tonight:

Purchased at the farmer’s market this weekend- $1.25 for the bunch. I have no idea what it is. “Something, something choy,” said the farmer. From what he told me, mystery vegetable is good sauteed with chicken. We’ll see about it. For posterity, I threw in some plain old baby bok choy, mushrooms, an onion, a green pepper and garlic (and lemongrass for seasoning). Figured if Mystery Veg was horrible, we could at least rely on the other veggies.
Going in the pot- here we go.

I sauteed it until it was looking just a bit wilted.

Survey says…..? (served over quinoa)

Nerd Approved.

Earl provided me with much amusement when he tried to eat a piece of lemongrass which I must have missed taking out before serving. “Everything’s really good,” he said with half the piece of lemongrass sticking out of his mouth while he chewed, “but why is this so tough?” Heh. Whoops!
Hey, how do you like his new beard? It was my birthday present
Every year around my birthday I ask him to grow a mustache or a beard. I think he looks particularly handsome and very rugged. He kvetches about it itching growing in, but usually complies. I figure I have a week or so left to enjoy before he gets fed up and shaves.
Verdict of the mystery veg: It was good! I wouldn’t say great, but certainly not bad. Had a pleasant crunch to it, but you could tell it was cooked through. Earl thought it tasted “generic” and “like greens” but… Maybe next time I see that particular farmer I will try harder to find out exactly what it is called.

It blows my mind that there are parts of the country that still have farmers markets going on! I am soooo jealous. Ours ended in September
Glad the mystery veg worked out for you!
Love the beard. I’m a big fan of facial hair too. I get sad when my husband shaves all of his scruff off!
I have no idea what your mystery veggie was! But then again I don’t think I’ve ever had choy or lemongrass at all. lol You are Mikey, he’ll try anything!
You sure do have some interesting dinners at your house!
The Nerd looks good with the beard and stash! My husband has a stash. I’ve never ever seen him without it! Not even in a picture when he was a teen. (His mom is a witch!) He does grow a beard when he is off for a week on vacation but he always shaves it! You would think he would keep it a little longer than that! I’ve told him that when he shaves it he should shave a pattern in it! lol
Hey! Maybe your Nerd Love will do it
Do take pictures if he does!

Looks like regular bok choy (not the baby kind) with those big yellow flowers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bokchoyflower.jpg
Glad it was tasty!
I did notice the beard on Earl right away; looks very nice on him; rugged! how did I miss your birthday? Happy belated!
interesting mystery veg. seems like a reasonable price to have tried it out and the verdict about liking it seemed favorable too

Ooh, that’s gai lan! I’m pretty sure, it’s like a Chinese version of brocolini, I recognize the little flowers (which my mom told me not to eat coz they’re “toxic”, but I’ve eaten plenty before and am still alive :>) Stir fry is good, they’re also good boiled and served with oyster sauce. Yum!
