My First Day in the ER Went Better Than This:

Thankfully!

There were a few amusing anecdotes, however I think I am going to pass on sharing them due to fear of HIPAA.

I Love this Corgi Photo!

Probably my favorite corgi photo of all time:

I love the expression on his face, the little paw touching his mouth in an “oh, shucks” aura, and of course his aero leetle sausage body.  Plus, he’s a tri!  He looks like Linus.

This picture was my avatar on TGR for many, many years.  So freaking adorable.

1st Day!

In about 5 minutes I’m leaving for my first day of volunteering in the Emergency Department at St. Luke’s in the Mission District.  Pretty excited :)

I’m actually shadowing another volunteer all day today, and then will be starting on my own next week.  I’m thinking maybe I should request Friday nights or something- you know, get some of the more hectic times.

Whatever time slot I end up with permanently, I am just excited to get some exposure and learn about how the ED works.

“I had a friend who was an EMT”

says my i-banker friend Scott on gchat this afternoon, “I wouldn’t have trusted him to pick up my dry cleaning.”

:D Ha. This came after I was warning Scott that in a few weeks I am going to be picking his Grandmother up from the nursing home and taking her in for dialysis. We were talking about how there are certainly some deadbeat EMTs out there. Hopefully I will not become one of them!

More updates soon. I have a ton of photos to get of my camera and lots to update on. I just wanted to hop on right now and post about how I shall soon be joining the esteemed profession of “people who are not worthy to fetch your drycleaning.”

To entertain you until CJ returns

I present this:

Clinicals

Tomorrow is my first day of clinicals for EMT School.  I’m doing a ride along with a San Francisco ambulance company, which is great because it means I get to spend the night in SF with Earl!

The ride-along is from 5am-5pm.  Our instructor advised us to bring homemade cookies for our crew, so tonight my uncle helped me make two-dozen of these:

I’m pretty psyched, although it’s a bit hard to relax because then on Thursday we have our National Registry NREMT Skills Testing. Basically if you fail the skills test, you fail the entire course. Talk about stressful. The skills I think I need the most practice on right now are Medical Assessment and Trauma Assessment. Hopefully I’ll get those down before Thursday. I was practicing on a pillow last night. We heard a story about a guy from the last class who went out and bought a blow-up sex doll to practice his assessments on! Heh. I tried to do them on Linus but he wasn’t really interested in telling me about his SAMPLE History or letting me take lung sounds.

Oh, guess what else! Yesterday we learned how to deliver babies. Freaking awesome. Although the placenta is pretty gross. And apparently some patients like to save it and eat it! Aye!

I am fried from getting 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night for the past 11 days. Sorry if this post is incoherent. Will check back in soon!

Alive!

Hey all,

Courtney is alive and well.  She’s staying at her Aunt and Uncle’s place with Linus while spending 12 hours per day at school and the other 12 either studying or sleeping.  She says that class is going well with the exception of some old southern redneck getting on her nerves.

Linus has been hanging out with her Aunt and Uncle — her Uncle even took him on one of his home inspections.  They not only hand him blocks of cheese, potato chips, peanuts, and whatever else they happen to be munching on, but they’ve trained him to believe he sits on the couch too.  He’s going to have a rough couple days when he comes back home and the regime changes.
